Just a quick reminder to those of you who may or may not have explored my dark corner of the web, my domain, jessedyck.info, is about to expire. Please, from here on in, use jessedyck.com to access my page. Im tempted to renew the domain for a year just to keep some of the trafic, hell maybe even take a page out of Jobs’ book and make it a 2 year transformation to the new domain. But alas, I am cheap, and would rather spend that $30 on new case fans or something of the like.

In short, please use jessedyck.com! I’ll post something interesting sometime in the future.

42 Games for 42 Galaxies!

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

I don’t know about everyone else on the internet but The Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy movie was the first time I had been exposed to the world of Author Dent and the translating fish. I have never been much of a book reader, so I didn’t get around to reading the series. However, I loved the movie. Some loved it, some hated it, but say what you will, the answer will always be 42!

On that note, the deep dark internet is host to 42 HHGTTG related flash games. If you haven’t watched the movie or read the books, you wont get very far, so make sure to do that, then check this out! I thought it was fun, and I’m sure I’ll waste hours at work playing it!

More GMaps Exploration

Monday, August 8th, 2005

I was just exploring Google Maps some more. First off, I decided that I would check out Australia, but on the way over, I ran into Hawaii. Some nice shots in there, but unfortunately it does not get into the high res pictures when you zoom in, so the details are low. I was specifically looking for the Pearl Harbour memorial, but again, it was not visible.

After that disapointment, I decided to zoom in on Australia and hunt for the Missile Silos that are apparently going to be removed or censored soon. First thing I managed to zoom in on was this amazing picture of a lake in the more western portion of the continent. Really nice shades of blue, check it out!

Vista Beta 1 Opinions

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

This may or may not have been written be me.

“I know its beta and all, but it freaking sucks! All it is, is XP with a new interface! And all XP is, is 2000 with a new interface, so all in all, it sucks.

On that note, it starts off with a much nicer log in screen. It has a very liquid look and feel, this is the first thing that I actually liked (namely because its the first thing I saw). The task bar on my system is simply Graphite in color, and besides a slightly different shaped start button, its all the same from there. Then the actual start menu looks all the same, except they added their desktop search feild at the bottom, which reminds my very much of Spotlight, but what would a new Windows release be without an OSX rip off. One thing you may notice when you open up the start menu is that there is no ‘My Computer’ or ‘My Documents’. But instead, we have ‘Computer’ and ‘Documents’. Is that what we are paying for when we purchase a new version of windows? I mean shit, they actually cut out part of the OS, instead of adding to it! That said, I like it, I always thought ‘My Computer’ sounded odd, maybe its because I do Tech Support for a living, I don’t know (you try telling an american to Right Click on My Computer… they usually tell you they are currently using Their Computer). Instead of an ‘All Programs’ submenu, when you click ‘All Programs’, the left side of the Start Menu, which usually holds your most used programs, changes over to give you the normal list of installed Apps. You can then expand the folders by clicking on them, and the list is shuffled down to display the contants of that folder. Nice feature. Thats all for the start menu. Luckily we still have the option of reverting back to the old school menu that so many of us like.

They redesigned Explorer completely. While the redesign is overall good, I hate the dynamic menus. When you switch to certain folders, the whole toolbar and side bar can change. and on older systems it causes a bit of annoying lag. Vista is not going to run on P3s and lower, thats for sure! I also miss my File menu, as it is completely gone, and so far I have yet to get it back! It seems that they are trying to get away from the standard file system. Instead of seeing ‘C:Program FilesApp1′ in the address bar, you now see ‘Computer>Local Disk (C:) > Programs > App1 >’, and each arrow is clickable to see the folders in that specific directory. I like that feature. Other then that, Explorer is much more streamlined in terms of tool bars, and I actually kind of like it. Sure its not Finder, but it works.

As many of you may know, Luna is completely gone. Classic is still hanging around, but now we have Aero. This new theme will actually vary depending on your systems specifications. Because I am running mine in a Virtual machine for the time being, I get to see the most basic Aero flavour. But on newer DX9 video cards we are suppose to be treated with some glass effects and a lot of neat animations. The old msstyle system of Bitmap rendering is completely gone, and Aero is apparently much smoother. Again, I have yet to see this.

Microsoft also fixed the Category View of the Control Panel. Instead of having a few categories that you must click on, they have the sub-sections set up below the categories. Should make for easier navigation. Also, almost all of the system icons have been updated with a shaded, smoother set that actually looks quite nice. They have yet to update a few icons deeper in the system, but at first glance, everything looks shiny and new.

Security wise, I am sure they did some kind of enhancements, but I have yet to see them! The only thing I found was UAP (User Access Protection), and that was not even disabled for my Administrator account. What that does is restrict users from being able to install pretty much anything. When you attempt to install a program, a message comes up and requires you to enter an Admin password. This means that we can run Limited accounts every day, and simply enter your password when ever you want to install something. OSX has been doing this for a few years now…

So far, I’m not too impressed. All it seems like is another interface enhancement. While the interface is nice (Not OSX nice, but MS nice), it’s not worth the update IMO. But we will see, its still beta.”

Classic, Quake3 and myPod

Saturday, July 23rd, 2005

Well, I just spent a good hour or 2 workin on getting Classic workin on my iBook. Why? Well, I may be going to a Bronx Lan (hosted by Winnipeg Gamers) tomorrow (well, technically today), and they are hosting a Quake3Arena tournament, so I figured I would use my iBook and play some Quake3 with em. At first, when I tryied to install the game, the installer told me I needed Classic installed, so after attempting to install it off my OS9.1 install CD failed, I decided to ask Google, and Google answered. I had to use my 10.3 Additional Software CD to install Classic, then I was able to install Quake3.

Now, I had it running in Classic, but it was laggy. Luckily, went hunting for the latest patches, and installed it. It looked like the patch supported OSX, so I looked into installing the patch correctly. What I ended up doing was downloading the Altivec Test2 package into /Applications/Quake/, however Quake3 itself was installed in /Quake3/. So what I did was remove everything, reinstall quake3 to /Applications/Quake3/, and then installed the patch to the same directory. After that, the instructions on ID’s web site told me that I will have to take the PAK0.PK3 file from the /Quake3/BaseQ3/ directory on the CD and put it in the same directory on my HD. So I did that, launched the Quake3 G4 program file from /Applications/Quake3/, showed it where my original install directory is, and then proceeded to lose to the computer in a quick match round.

So, all that working on Classic only to find out that Quake3 has a patch that not only works with OSX, but is also optimized for Altivec processors (G4 and up). Well, atleast now I know how to install Classic.

Oh yeah, and uhh, you can get the patch from ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/mac/

Last week, I bought a 1GB iPod shuffle. Little did I know not a week later I would be trading that sucker in for a 6GB iPod Mini. My friend’s roommate was looking to score some cash for rent I’m assuming, so I was able to buy his barely used mini off him for the same price that I bought my iPod shuffle for. While I already filled it with songs and podcasts, I love it!

Well, I’m out for the night. I started work on my new site again, did a major overhaul to the visual side. Now all I need to do is convert a few more pages over to XHTML, then I can go public with it. I may spend a bit longer and experiment with AJAX, but that has yet to be decided. Goodbye good sir!
