Garmin Nuvifone

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Going to jump in with a quick post on Garmin’s latest announcement on their new phone.

I’m a happy owner of an iPhone, but when talking to a friend yesterday and the topic of smart phones came up, I struggled to recommend anything else other then the Treo he already owns.

Well, now I may have a new recommendation for him.

The Garmin Nuvifone has a clean exterior look to it, same form factor as the iPhone (at least it looks that way, of course I haven’t seen one of these yet), the phone app looks similar to the iphone, and seems that it has a full web browser on board. Direct compitition with the iPhone? Yes.

A few things pop into mind right off the hop. I’ve never owned a Garmin GPS device, so bare with me if they already tackled these;

1) Does it play music? I hate to say it, but after the iPhone, I wouldn’t consider owning a phone that doesn’t play music.

2) What engine is the browser going to be based on? I’m dreading that 2008 is going to be the start of a mobile browser war. IE, Safari, what’s next?

3) Will it support flash?

No, I’m kidding.

What kind of blog doesn’t update in almost 2 months! I’ll tell you, my kind! I am sorry, but I have actually really been working hard on pushing out my new XHTML design, but ran into a slight delay.

Basically I was using my desktop computer as a test server for the new site, but I blew a motherboard and some RAM, so I had to first get that replaced, and now I decided to set up a dedicated server at home. I have been working on that after work at night, but it turns out some of my older hardware that was going into it is not quite up to snuff. A dead hard drive may set me back even longer. I tried a low level format last night, but then when installing windows 2000, it blue screened, prefect! So I will have to look more into it tonight.

Oh, and also in mid October I went on a road trip from Winnipeg (My home town) to Montreal to see Death Cab for Cutie, my favourite indie band, and let me tell you they rocked! I will try to get some pictures up within the next few years (hehe, jokes). Their opening band was also awesome, called Youth Group. I bought thier CD after their act and I love it! So check those 2 out if you haven’t heard them.

Other then that, the release of Firefox 1.5 yesterday, and the LANs that I have been attending, I have no news to report right now. Once I get my computer situation back in gear, expect more posts! Bye for now.

Free Speech?

We all know that I use Firefox religously on Windows. I’ve been using it since way back when it was known as Pheonix, then we all switched over to Firebird for a version or 2, then it was over to the Firefox we now know and love. The best thing about it is that it does not contain viruses! Well, more accurately, it does not allow them to get into your computer. Almost any browser that does not contain ActiveX controls (basically, anything other then Internet Explorer) will help reduce the amount of spyware and viruses that can get through your computer. That is why I always recommend Firefox to everyone I talk to. It helps keep your computer clean, it’s fast, free, and open source!

The key competitor to Firefox for Windows (in my opinion, Safari runs better on OSX, which is why you can catch me using it on my iBook) is Opera. Internet Explorer is obviously a competitor, but it’s like comparing a Farrari with a Cavalier. Sure the Cavalier has more market share, but I mean really, it’s a Farrari! So, Firefox is a Farrari, and Opera is a Lambourgini. The main thing that always turned me away from Opera? It was not free, and it’s closed source. Was. Today, Opera announced they will be removing the ads, and giving it away for Free! That is totally cool. The next thing I would like to see is open source, but not everyone is perfect. So, whether you’re a Firefox freak like me, or just an IE user looking for a clean society, check it out!

Opera Free!

I still recommend and use Firefox, but in the end both browsers do the trick. I just want to see more people using standards compliant browsers! Makes the world a better place for all of us.
