Classic, Quake3 and myPod

Saturday, July 23rd, 2005

Well, I just spent a good hour or 2 workin on getting Classic workin on my iBook. Why? Well, I may be going to a Bronx Lan (hosted by Winnipeg Gamers) tomorrow (well, technically today), and they are hosting a Quake3Arena tournament, so I figured I would use my iBook and play some Quake3 with em. At first, when I tryied to install the game, the installer told me I needed Classic installed, so after attempting to install it off my OS9.1 install CD failed, I decided to ask Google, and Google answered. I had to use my 10.3 Additional Software CD to install Classic, then I was able to install Quake3.

Now, I had it running in Classic, but it was laggy. Luckily, went hunting for the latest patches, and installed it. It looked like the patch supported OSX, so I looked into installing the patch correctly. What I ended up doing was downloading the Altivec Test2 package into /Applications/Quake/, however Quake3 itself was installed in /Quake3/. So what I did was remove everything, reinstall quake3 to /Applications/Quake3/, and then installed the patch to the same directory. After that, the instructions on ID’s web site told me that I will have to take the PAK0.PK3 file from the /Quake3/BaseQ3/ directory on the CD and put it in the same directory on my HD. So I did that, launched the Quake3 G4 program file from /Applications/Quake3/, showed it where my original install directory is, and then proceeded to lose to the computer in a quick match round.

So, all that working on Classic only to find out that Quake3 has a patch that not only works with OSX, but is also optimized for Altivec processors (G4 and up). Well, atleast now I know how to install Classic.

Oh yeah, and uhh, you can get the patch from ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/mac/

Last week, I bought a 1GB iPod shuffle. Little did I know not a week later I would be trading that sucker in for a 6GB iPod Mini. My friend’s roommate was looking to score some cash for rent I’m assuming, so I was able to buy his barely used mini off him for the same price that I bought my iPod shuffle for. While I already filled it with songs and podcasts, I love it!

Well, I’m out for the night. I started work on my new site again, did a major overhaul to the visual side. Now all I need to do is convert a few more pages over to XHTML, then I can go public with it. I may spend a bit longer and experiment with AJAX, but that has yet to be decided. Goodbye good sir!

Google Maps

Wednesday, July 20th, 2005

Yeah yeah, I know, Google Maps is old by now. Everyone is done playing with it and now simply use it as an every day tool for finding directions to that LAN party this weekend, but what if the LAN party is being hosted on the moon? Well, yee’d be fucked as the pirates would say! Unless, of course, they created Google Moon!

Google Moon is basically Google Satellite Maps, but on the moon. Now its not nearly as big, it only really covers one Google Maps screen, but who knows, they may eventually get imagery of the whole moon and allow us to do some sight seeing on the moon without the large price tag being charged by the Russians to take you up there.

It will basically show you the main landing zone section for the Apollo missions, including Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17. As well, it also places a link to the boring old Earth Google Maps, but who wants that when you can learn about the moon!

Blink 182

I think of a while ago
We might of have had it all

I was so stupid then
You needed time to grow
But now just as things change
As well my feelings do
In time things rearrange
I am so sick of chasing you

But what do I get ’cause I just seem to lose
You make me regret those times I spent with you

And playing those games as I wait for your call
And now I give up, so goodbye and so long

It’s not a change of pace
This time I’ll get it right
It’s not a change of taste

I was the one there last night

You have your other friends
They were there when you cried
Didn’t mean to hurt you then
Best friends just won’t leave your side

But what do I get ’cause I just seem to lose
You make me regret those times I spent with you
And playing those games as I wait for your call
And now I give up, so goodbye and so long

It’s not a change of pace
This time I’ll get it right
It’s not a change of taste
I was the one there last night

When I needed you most
When I needed a friend
You let me down now
Like I let you down then
So sorry, it’s over

So sorry, it’s freaking over…

Software Updates

Wednesday, July 13th, 2005

There are a few nice new spiffy updates released in the past few days. We will start with the big one.

  • Mac OSX 10.4.2 - The new update for Tiger contains a lot of fixes in terms of compatibilty, some performance and memory usage enhancements, but the largest one in my opinion is the new dashboard interface and memory/cpu enhancements. Since dashboard is always running, I think everyone should notice some performance boosts. This update is available via the Software Update option in the Apple Menu.
  • Firefox 1.0.5 - New firefox update, may or may not contain any performance ehancments, but it’s suppose to be mainly a security update, along with some stability improvements. Myself, it already froze once in Tiger, and I’ve just finished moving all my bookmarks from Firefox to Safari (which was as easy as exporting them from firefox, and then importing them to safari and moving them into the appropriate folders based on where I wanted them to display). The windows flavour runs fine as usual, nothing noticable yet. Grab it from mozilla.org.
  • ObjectBar 1.2 - I think I have mentioned this program before. It basically mimics the OSX dock on your windows box. This new version is a great improvement on the magnification and animations of the dock itself. The program is not bloated at all once you play with the settings, but it still has many advanced features that allow it to be more functional then the OSX dock. I’d rather have the real thing, but for my windows computer it works well. You be the judge. Get either the free or advanced version here.
