Google Networth

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

I know I know, I never shut up about Google, but how could you. The company does so much for the internet! Without Google (sadly, we know how that goes after the few hours of DNS issues they had a few weeks back) we would be lost, not being able to check our email, get the latest prices on the Zire72 we’ve been eyeing, or spy on the Pentagon!

Now, what would we do without Disney or GM? Well, apparently the lack of those 2 would equal that the lack of google. I mean we could really do without those shotty wannabe GTOs (it’s only a Holden Monaro anyways… and shouldn’t we all be driving German cars?) and I’m sure Mr. Jobs could pick up the slack if Disney wasn’t around. Granted we would feel a great loss, but they are dispensable. But Google, who would step up? No one would trust Microsoft to manage the internet, and Altavista (opps, not astalavista) doesn’t look to be making a comeback any time soon.

But regardless, Google is now worth more then GM and Disney combined, according to this Yahoo! page. Pretty interesting to know that even with all their Beta programs (Froogle, GMail… I’m expecting the ladder to go public once their publicity dies down) they keep on getting bigger and bigger. It is kind of scary to know that we all depend on one service. As I said earlier, Google was down for a few hours just a couple of weeks ago, and when I noticed it, I felt lost and didn’t instantly think to try a different search engine. I can’t see them going anywere any time soon, but you never know!

iTunes Album Art

Monday, May 2nd, 2005

When it comes to my iTunes Library, I am a perfectionist. I spend hours upon hours making sure all my ID3 tags are correct to the very best of my knowledge.

Back when I used to use Kazaa to play all my music, I would be changing around the artist and album information, but since it (atleast back then) stored all that information in a DB file, and not the ID3 tags, each time I would reformat my computer and re-import all the audio, I would lose all that work. So now my iTunes is all done by ID3 tags, and organized in my music folder as /%artist%/%album%/%songname%.m4a so that even when I reformat, all my music is just the way I left it.

One thing I have just recently started playing with is Album Art. When I ripped my CDs, I would always add the album art. Or when I was correcting the ID3 tags in downloaded content (which is legal in Canada, remember!) that contained album art jpegs, I was be sure to add it in. But the rest of my library, all the older music that I’ve had for a while, has no album art at all! What a rip!

Tonight, by mistake, I stumbled into a nice little iTunes extension that will pull the album art off amazon and nicely tag it to my music. I tested it out a bit tonight, but concidering its 4am and I really should be sleeping, I have yet to go through my entire library. I’ll likely do it soon, but until then, enjoy this nice little plug in!

Note: I beleive this plugin is only for the Windows version of iTunes. Also, be sure to check out my Now Playing iTunes extension that normally (when working) would be on the right side under the current cold winnipeg weather. It costs $10 USD for a license, but save for the configuration errors on my part, I have yet to run into a problem with it! Sadly, its also only for Windows iTunes.
