Legal Torrents

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

God damnit! I thought of this first!

With all the controversy over BitTorrent downloading, a few months ago I had thought it would be a cool idea to build a legal BitTorrent site. You know, to serve up all those torrents for Linux distros, Battlefield Vietnam patches, and even some indie bands who freely offer their music (Read: Trip62). I had mentioned it to one of my friends who is also into web design, but the idea obviously never took off.

Just a few minutes ago I was surfin digg.com and noticed the link to a legal torrent site! Well I’m a bit jelous to say the least. I knew it was a good idea, but I just didn’t push it forward on anyone else. I could have easily got together a team to build the site, but now its too late. Couldn’t be the first in the game, and as we all know, its usually the first that survive, eg: suprnova (I guess survive isn’t the best word for their position, but they were the largest torrent site around), napster (dido), and iTunes.

Well, heres the link. I congradulate them on being the first with this nobel effort. Lets show the MPAA how BitTorrent can be used for legit purposes!

Twice Is Now Thrice

Thursday, February 17th, 2005

Heres 2 sites I’ve been visiting a lot lately:

  1. digg.com
  2. A news resource site, almost like slashdot (/.). Its a collection of news that the users submit, all lined up on the home page, all stored in a massive database. The thing I like about digg over /. is that it has a smaller userbase (for the time being) and more tech-related postings. I have noticed /. to have a lot of stories that just do not appeal to me, and thus digg has taken its place in my life.

  3. lifehacker.com
  4. Lifehacker.com is a site also about tech, but more general tech. While I know this sounds kind of hypocrytical compaired to the last site I mentioned, its actually not. Basically this site (IMO) is more about how technology relates to our lifes. Its also just a huge news database like digg and /.

Works been busy, havent had time to work on the gallery, save for a few minor adjustments. I fixed the PHP errors. My buddy at work basically said to try using a more absolute path for one of the functions, so instead of jessedyck.info/gallery/images/dyck15.gif its now something like /home/jessedyck.info/www/gallery/images/dyck15.gif. So if your ever manipulating images with PHP, remember to use a local path, not a remote path.

Night, I’m finally going to see The Aviator tomorrow, and Im fairly excited.

Gallery and More!

Monday, February 14th, 2005

Well, as you may have noticed, there is new links on the left! Weeee! I have been creating the image gallery that I have wanted to create for so very long. So far all is going well, except for one small thing. A shit load of errors! If you click on either of the links on the side under gallery, you will notice a bunch of errors. Those are to do with how I read the image, determine the size, and scale it down accordingly. This way is better then simply having each image be 100×100 because now atleast if say the image is 300×200, instead of being deformed, it will be scaled down, retaining its aspect ratio.

But either way, it’s all pointless if I’m just going to keep getting a bunch of errors. So I think I may try my hand at an upload script, that way I can make a thumbnail while uploading the images. That way only I see any error (hopefully none by that time). This is the first time I have looked into handling images with PHP so it’s been a fun adventure!

I found parts of my old datebase located at jessedyck.tk. I still havent set up a redirect for that domain, and likely wont now untill I get the old posts into the new site. I still lost a chunk between Dec. 13 2004 and Jan. 30 2005, but saving the few earily posts between May 8 2004 and Dec. 13 2004 is priceless. So Ill get those all on this site, then set up some kind of redirect to the new site. That may or may not get more trafic headed my way (I’m gonna say not!).

Well, I’m off to bed. Ava good Valentines day all!

A9

Friday, February 4th, 2005

The folks over at Amazon and the new A9 search engine are compiling a visual yellow pages. At the time of posting, there are 10 US cities where you can from the comfort of your browser view the street and store front of the location you are looking for.

I have always thought it would be cool to have a virtual earth, where you could visit anywhere in the world from your computer and endulge in a real world simulation of your desired location. While you cannot walk up and down the streets with A9, this is a step in the right direction. Hopefully it will take off and they will cover all of North America in a few years!

I bet at this point your wanting to see more, right? Well, heres some links to check out.
