Firefox’s Awesomeness…

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2004

It seems everyone else is finally starting to realize the awsomeness of Firefox. As stated in the article below, the 1.0PR release has arleady been downloaded 1.3 Million times within the first 6 days of its release. The goal for the web site, spreadfirefox.com, was to hit 1 Million downloads in 10 days. As you can see, they did it in almost half that time. I for one and happy that people are starting to use it, its about time open source software starts to go mainstream like this, and its nice to see something make a real attempt at knocking IE off its browser-king throne.

For the interested parties, the article can be found at CNET News.com.

Bittorrent Ports

Tuesday, September 14th, 2004

I was talking to a friend at work today and we got to discussing BitTorrent. If you don’t know, BitTorrent is a file sharing protocol designed to help take the load off file servers by allowing the clients partially downloaded files to be shared with others wishing to download the same file. In theory it would have an amazing practical use for say Linux ISOs or those huge Battlefield Vietnam patches, but it has yet to be adopted by them in many cases. Sadly to say this great technology has taken over the pirating scene and thus BitTorrent has made itself a bad rep in the corporate environment.

At this point I would like to say that I do not promote the use of BitTorrent for piracy or any other piracy programs or actions.

Now back to the topic at hand: Ports!
As I said I was talking to a friend at work, and he mentioned that BitTorrent uses a plethora of ports, and by opening up said ports on your NAT supported router, you could actually increase your speeds. So heres how it works; BT uses ports 6881-6999 (All TCP ports). It uses one port for each connection, so if you do not plan on downloading more then 10 torrents, you only need to open ports 6881-6890. Personally, I opened up all of them just to be safe. At the same time the trackers (servers which BT must connect to in order to start the download) require port 6969 (Also TCP).

If you are behind a router, you will have no problems using BT, however by opening these ports you are allowing both outgoing and incoming traffic to transmit within that range, and this is said to be a sure fire way to increase your speeds.

I Hate School!

Wednesday, September 8th, 2004

I know I know, I’m not going to school anymore, but thats precisely the problem! I am the only one left awake at 2:30AM now. Even the used-to-be latenighters are sleeping, or trying to. You would think I would take this time to sleep as well, but concidering my nights are now my days (work schedual) there’s no point.

Yesterday was the return of G4TechTV’s The Screen Savers. Due to work I was not able to watch it, but I think I shall try to catch the repeat today before work. Hell, I may even get into the habit of watching it everyday before work, untill I get a TiVo-like device. Well I hope Kevin and Alex (the new co-host) had a good time, as well as the rest of the crew; Sarah, Yohsi, Foo (Dan), and everyone else. I’m stoked about todays episode, hell I may even call in sick so I can watch it. (Yeah, ok I know, I wont, but still!) The Woz is going to be on, can’t wait to see that interview. I think this Mac obession is getting unhealthy.

First day on the floor at Convergys. Luckily I managed to stick with a buddy from our training class, so it wasn’t half as bad. Actually it was. We literally had 1 call within 4 hours. BORING! Oh well, tomorrows a new day that will bring new things.

Since I’m bored, I may start coding. Night!

Progress.

Monday, September 6th, 2004

Again, this one took a while, but not as long as last time!

Well, I have started my new job. After 3 weeks of 4pm-11:30pm, Im finally done training. We had our final test last friday (I got 96%, I think my average in the class ended up being 96%!) and then we had some pizza and messed around for the night. Tomorrow I start on the floor. Im a bit nervous but we (we being my class) get it easier then everyone else did. We get to Y-Connect for the week, and take calls as we feel neccessary. Im sure Ill take a call or 2 tomorrow out of sheer bordom, but we’ll see.

Happy Birthday Michelle!

Michelle is a very special person in my life, and today is her 18th birthday. I wasn’t informed that her and bunch of people were going out for dinner, else I likely would have went too. Oh well, Im taking her out next saturday, either for lunch or dinner.

So, back to my site. Spent the night coding and putting everything in the Database which I set up, so what you see now is being pulled straight from the DB. Next move is to set up a user account system, and my own admin system so I can basically add entrys from any browser with ease. Thats the long part. I likely wont touch on that this week, but who knows.

Ill keep in touch.
